Hormone Therapy

What is Bio-identical Hormone Pellet Therapy?

Bio-identical Hormone Therapy (BHT) was developed in the US in the 1930s and has been approved by the Federal Drug Administration for human use. The effectiveness of bio-identical hormones has been well established in scientific literature.

The science of hormone therapy and administration of hormones has rapidly developed in recent years and now there exist methods for time-release pellets of hormones for humans to be placed subcutaneously under the skin to be released directly into the bloodstream.

The therapy is intended to alleviate symptoms that result from the body’s decreased production of hormones, which can lead to severe sleep problems, mental health and anxiety problems, decreased metabolism, reductions in sexual interest, hot flashes, and night sweats.

Hormone therapy is intended to supplement the body’s natural protective benefits, which are regulated by hormones and controls bone density, cardiovascular strength, immune response, brain develop, organ functioning, and aging.

Scientific literature has repeatedly demonstrated that hormone therapy has contributed to the slowing down and reversal of diseases associated with aging, such as osteoporosis, heart disease, dementia, menopause, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.

How does Bio-identical Hormone Pellet Therapy work?

Typically, bio-Identical hormones are developed using all-natural plant-based substances that are designed to be processed and metabolized by our bodies in order to reduce the side effects associated with changes and fluctuations in hormone levels in the body. These scientifically developed and patented hormone compounds are considered bioidenticals because they can be configured and administered specifically to each woman’s unique medical condition based on the presentation of symptoms and doctor recommendations.

Bio-identical Hormone Pellet Therapy is essentially designed to treat the individual and unique medical needs of each patient as an alternative to providing patients with mass-manufactured drugs.

Hormones are considered the chemical messengers for the human body because either they are secreted into the bloodstream and are regulated by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in the brain or the thyroid gland in the neck or hormones are produced locally within specific organs. Hormones affect the functioning of cells, organs, and complex biological and nervous system functions, such as, homeostasis, sleep, eating, sexual arousal, aging, and mood. Each different type of hormone is produced by the body and is designed to affect only specific cells or organs.

Hormones levels are constantly shifting and target specific cells that have unique receptors for that hormone, similarly like a lock and key. However, cells that do not have the specific receptor site for a designated hormone will not be affected directly by the hormone but may be affected by a cascade of biological events due to the complexity of the human body.

Research has demonstrated that specific types of cells produce and regulate their own hormone levels such as Estrogen that is made inside the cells that utilize Estrogen (e.g. reproductive organs, brain, bone, heart, etc.) from available Testosterone. Additionally, proper hormone levels are needed to maintain neurotransmitters levels (e.g. serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline, etc.) and function in the brain that affects psychological well-being, emotional regulation, and behavioral outcomes. Hormonal imbalances are often correlated with impulsive behaviors, low self-control, anxiety, stress, and depression.

What is the Process for Starting Bioidentical Hormone Pellet Therapy?

Patients begin the process of being prescribed Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy with a complimentary visit to our Practice. We then complete a patient questionnaire about their medical history and symptoms. The next step is to take a blood draw.

It takes approximately two weeks to receive the results of your blood test. The doctor will educate the patient about the known risks and side effects associated with hormone replacement therapy and length of treatment that is required for positive results to happen. If the patient decides to proceed and accept the treatment recommendations of their physician, then treatment can begin immediately. It takes physicians less than five minutes to insert the pellets subcutaneously under the skin.

Patients are encouraged to resume normal and reductions in symptoms should be observable within the first few weeks. Patients are discouraged from swimming or other strenuous activities during the first week as the pellets may become contaminated and ineffective if they are exposed to water or may counteractive with excessive hormones that are being naturally released during the course of physical exercise.

The physician will schedule a follow-up meeting four weeks after your first pellet insertion and administration. At the follow-up meeting, the patient will be required to receive another blood test and the results of the blood test will be examined along with questioning the patient about symptom relief. The physician will determine if any adjustments are needed in the management of the hormones contained within the pellets based on current dosage recommendations for specific symptoms. The physician may also encourage the patient to enhance their health by using their surplus energy from increased hormone levels to exercise and to maintain a healthy diet.

During the first year of treatment, patients can expect to receive three to four pellet insertions. Research demonstrates that men require pellet insertion every four months and women require insertion every three months due to natural differences associated with the biological functioning of the different genders. In consultation with a physician, a patient can stop Bio-identical Hormone Pellet treatment at any time, which often results in the patient’s hormone levels to return to their pre-treatment levels. In most cases, pre-treatment symptoms also return upon termination of treatment.
